Guide

How to start a podcast when you do not know where to begin.

Starting a podcast sounds simple until you actually sit down to do it. Suddenly you have to think about format, equipment, workflow, editing, hosting, publishing and whether any of it will sound good enough to release.

The good news is that you do not need every answer before you begin. You just need the right order.

1. Start with the show, not the gear.

Most people start by googling microphones. That is usually too early. First decide what the podcast is, who it is for and why someone would listen.

  • What is the core idea?
  • Who is the audience?
  • What kind of format fits best?
  • How often do you realistically want to publish?

2. Keep the first version simple.

Your first launch does not need a giant media operation behind it. It needs a clear format, a manageable workflow and enough quality that you feel good putting it out.

Simplicity wins early. Complexity can come later.

3. Record with the edit in mind.

Good production starts before the edit. A little planning on structure, pacing and recording setup saves a huge amount of stress later.

  • Prepare a loose episode flow
  • Choose a quiet recording setup
  • Keep expectations realistic for the first sessions

4. The polish matters more than people think.

Listeners will forgive a lot, but rough pacing, distracting edits and unclear audio make new shows feel unfinished fast.

That is why post-production is often the difference between “we made a podcast” and “this actually feels real.”
